So I am trying my hand (or our stomachs) at a new thing this summer. Going Local. What is that all about you ask?! Boy you guys sure do ask a lot of questions! I was introduced to the Go Local Challenge by Heather in Boise. Her challenge is to make at least one meal a week using local (250 mile radius) or home grown ingredients throughout the summer. Grow your own food, visit your local farmer's market, shop the local products at the grocery store. I am committed to this project, but have to admit I have started a little slowly.
We have yet to plant our garden (this is what planting a garden in 2008 looks like),
but we (and when I say "we" again I mean "Jason") are composting like little fools. I also bought some local ingredients at the grocery store and ate some of my friend Andrea's home grown lettuce and peas...look at me go!
I have decided to broaden my 250 miles (I hope that is OK Heather) to the state of Washington, because A: I would like all of Washington to feel the love, B: half the time I don't know how far away the towns are and therefore would have to carry an atlas to the store and that just crimps my style man, and C: I would like to include Oregon. OK...Oregon is technically not part of Washington, but we are basically next door neighbors and I discovered a really yummy hummus from Oregon...so there!
Oh wait I almost forgot...we get our milk and eggs delivered to our door from a local dairy. What I am I talking about...we are practically "local pioneers". And yes the milk man is cute...if ya like that mid-twenties, scruffy skater boy look. Oh, my, I have gotten off topic. Let's get back on track shall we? If you are interested in joining Go Local 2009 check out Heather's blog for all the deets. Here is to a loco local summer. Is tequila local, because this weather really lends itself to a ice cold margarita...le drink, le drink!
